A bit of good news regarding internships:

The Gwen Greene Center is still offering Summer Internship Funding for remote positions and the application deadline has been pushed to April 24th. In addition, this year the funds are also available to graduating seniors (Class of 2020).
Lastly, we have developed an assortment of virtual resources for students about finding remote internships, projects, gigs, and other opportunities for the summer.

Course Outcomes/Breakout Capstone/Graduation

Graphic designers get creative to show support during Covid-19 outbreak2 Course Goals/Outcomes for this term:

  1. Theoretical and practical components come together through group projects, design, and discussions. How will we accomplish this now? Through posts on the website, in our weekly all class meetings and in your group capstone weekly meetings.

2. We will continue to make and research your capstones as you build upon and refine your work from last semester. Deliverables? The TWO bi-weekly reports, the FINAL report and your capstone website (which includes: a link to your video, the final project poster, and the actual capstone project – whatever that turns out to be). We will have a ‘final’ presentation that will not be graded but will be a chance to tell your peers what your capstone turned out to be.

Remember: From this point forward, we agreed the humane option is the best option. Please let us know if these course outcomes seem untenable.

Other things to note:

Based on your feedback, I set up a Breakout Capstone: Designing for Covid-19 Send an email to expressing your interest and we will start to organize later this week.

  3. For students regarding S/F:
    • All registrations for all students will move to the S/F option as of March 23. The restriction on the number of S/F courses in a semester is suspended for Spring 2020.
    • Students will be allowed to select a letter grade (A-E) option for any/all of their courses but must submit a formal request by April 3. Information will be forthcoming on accessing the online form to make this request.
    • Requests to select the letter grade option may not be changed once submitted.
    • Students will not be able to uncover the S/F for Spring 2020 at any point in their future academic careers. Faculty will only indicate whether the student’s performance in the course is “satisfactory” or “fail” and, as a result, there will be no underlying grade to uncover.
    • Students will be able to use courses graded as S/F in Spring 2020 for programs of study (degree requirements/majors/minors/clusters/primary writing requirement).
    • Per existing policies, satisfactory (S) and Fail (F) grades do not factor into term or cumulative GPA calculations.  For Eastman students, the adoption of the College’s expanded S/F policy will be allowed for spring 2020 grades ONLY.
  4.  For Adobe CC: As a result of campus closure, student access to Adobe Creative Cloud in labs and classrooms is not available. Adobe has provided temporary at-home access for impacted students and faculty so that they can continue their work remotely. Please follow the instructions below to enable access to Creative Cloud Desktop Apps on your personal device. Visit and use your school credentials to sign in

Hello from home.

get ready to innovate

As you already know, for the rest of this academic year, instruction for undergraduate and graduate students in AS&E and for most schools at the University will take place online. Undergraduates should complete the semester remotely at their permanent home residence; students may return to (or remain on) campus if their individual circumstances warrant it. The message from UR Leadership in its entirety can be read here:

Leadership Message to University of Rochester Community

Please know that moving the course and our work online is in process and I’m looking forward to hearing from you now or anytime so I incorporate your suggestions.

I also wanted to reiterate that you will graduate and we will celebrate that. Together. The graduation committee is in for a REAL challenge this year.

So, get ready to innovate. It’s up to us. I’m going to need you and our relationship to fuel me to be creative and research and to embrace this new classroom environment. More information about class on Wednesday soon.

Be well and enjoy the next week of break.
